Pebble Beach Open for Play Except During U.S. Open Week

Pebble Beach Logo

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (June 1, 2010) – As history waits its turn at Pebble Beach Golf Links, host of this month’s U.S. Open Championship, there is no wait to reserve a time to play the fabled course. Rounds are available now through July 6, with the exception of the championship week (June 14-20), giving golfers a chance to experience this national treasure under ultimate playing conditions.

Regarded as one of the greatest venues in U.S. Open history, Pebble Beach has been the site of four previous U.S. Open Championships, as well as the PGA Championship, crowning a Who’s Who of major champions – Jack Nicklaus (1972 Open), Lanny Wadkins (1977 PGA), Tom Watson (1982 Open), Tom Kite (1992 Open) and Tiger Woods (2000 Open).

Under the direction of Arnold Palmer, the Pebble Beach Golf Links has been strengthened and lengthened to 7,040 yards. With fairways now pushed closer to the coastline, the Pacific Ocean is no longer just a beautiful backdrop, but a prominent feature on all coastal holes. Enhancements have been made to four greens, 11 tees and 16 bunkers. In addition, six holes have had trees added or repositioned to add strategic value to the layout.

Palmer’s goal was simple: maintain the integrity and historic shot values of this American jewel while challenging today’s standard of players and equipment.

And that jewel is available to anyone who wants to know what it’s like to play championship golf on a U.S. Open course – one that also just happens to be one of the world’s great golf venues (recently ranked No. 1 on the list of “Tour Courses You Can Play” by Golfweek magazine).

Golf Like Tiger - Play the Reds!

You may not be able to hit 300 + yard drives like Tiger can but you can still learn to play a course like Tiger Woods.  All you have to do is play a forward set of tees.  Whenever I play golf with my dad (he’s in his 70’s), we play from the red tees.  I’ve played them enough times to know that it doesn’t always translate into a low score but if I’m hitting it well, it can be a lot of fun and I can actually experience golf similar to that of Tiger (except for winning all that money).

Playing the forward tees may make a few par 4’s nearly drivable (like they are for Tiger), it may make par 5’s reachable in two (like they are for Tiger), and it may make most par three’s a short iron shot (like they are for Tiger).  It can also help you better think your way around the course giving you the choice of hitting a 5 wood, hybrid club or even an iron off the tee instead of driver.  For most players, this often leads to more balls in the fairway and less in the desert which can translate into better scores.

While you may not want to play every round this way, it’s a great way to enjoy the course in a new way and maybe you’ll even feel like Tiger.  Golf is a game to be enjoyed – make sure you enjoy it!

Golf Industry Association Leaders Respond to USA Today

Dear Editor,

A recent spate of satirical articles including one by Robert Lipsyte (USA Today, April 6) has created an unwelcome distraction for many of the 28,000 PGA Professionals, 20,000 GCSAA Superintendents and 7,000 CMAA Managers at a time we can least afford it. Contrary to the ramblings of Mr. Lipsyte, golf is a vital part of America’s fabric as a sport and, most importantly in these times, as a source of stable employment.

Together our 55,000 members are on the front line of a work force of one million Americans who work at the nation’s 16,000 golf courses, 1,300 golf ranges and hundreds of related golf businesses. Your local golf course is the embodiment of the small business sector which President Obama rightly recognizes as the backbone of American enterprise — employing a multi cultural mix of professional and service personnel who rely on the sport and business of golf to provide food and shelter to their families. In 2005 it was estimated that golf also enabled another one million jobs for the tourism and real estate industries, and all told generates some $61 billion in annual wages.

Our “offices” are also good for the communities they serve. Golf facilities are professionally managed by individuals who have achieved various levels of certification, they serve as managed open green space which provides wildlife habitat, and they help to generate $3.5 billion charity dollars each year.

Finally, we’re equally proud of the values of our sport which sees our greatest athletes compete without referees and call penalties on themselves. Athletes such as Masters’ runner up Kenny Perry, whose courtesy and dignity under trying circumstances, make them role models for the three million kids in America who play golf. Still, our members have been drawn into a dialogue questioning golf’s virtues as a result of articles such as the one USA Today prominently placed in its editorial pages, distracting us from our core duties of serving the 28 million plus people who play golf for fun, health and recreation.

On behalf of all of us who work in golf, let us get back to our real work.

Sincerely,

Jim Remy, PGA
President, PGA of America

Mark Kuhns, CGCS
President, Golf Course Supertintendents Assoc of America

Michael Leemhuis, CCM, PGA
