PHOENIX, Ariz. – A new venue, with really cool views, will greet fans at the 2011 Waste Management Phoenix Open – The Fry’s 19th Hole on the Water. Located across the lake from the 18th fairway and open to the public, The Fry’s 19th Hole on the Water will be a fantastic place to watch golf, grab a beverage and enjoy some great food from Fry’s Food and Garcia’s Mexican Restaurants. The Fry’s 19th Hole on the Water also includes bleacher seating (facing the 17th green and 18th tee), can accommodate thousands of fans and features an interactive golf fun zone complete with golf ball hitting stations, putting greens and professional instruction from Southwest Section PGA professionals.

Active Law Enforcement, Firefighters, Military Personnel Get Free Admission To Phoenix Open

PHOENIX, Ariz. In honor of the men and women who actively serve this country in law enforcement, emergency services and the armed forces, they along with one accompanied guest are invited to be guests of The Thunderbirds (free of charge) at the upcoming Waste Management Phoenix Open, January 31st – February 6th at the TPC Scottsdale. This is the 10th year that the Thunderbirds have extended this free invitation. 

  All law enforcement, firefighters and military personnel and one accompanied guest will be admitted free of charge every day at the 2011 Waste Management Phoenix Open. Eligible personnel (sworn officers) must present their official department ID or badge at any ticket booth at the main tournament entrance. Business cards and pay stubs will not be accepted as forms of ID. Tickets are limited to two per day, per each official department ID. Standard tournament spectator policies will be in enforced, including no firearms allowed. 

“We cannot thank the men and women who serve this great country enough for all they do.” said 2011 Waste Management Phoenix Open Tournament Chairman Mike McQuaid.  “It’s a small gesture that we hope will go a long way towards showing our appreciation. At the 2010 Waste Management Phoenix Open, more than 1,500 service personnel and family members took advantage of this offer, and since the program’s inception in 2002, an average of 2,300 people per year have benefited from this opportunity.

Dustin Johnson Commits to Phoenix Open

PHOENIX, Ariz. – Four-time PGA TOUR winner Dustin Johnson, three-time TOUR winner Sean O’Hair and 2009 FBR/Phoenix Open champion Kenny Perry are among the latest commitments to the 2011 Waste Management Phoenix Open.  The 2011 Waste Management Phoenix Open will be played the week of January 31 – February 6 at the TPC Scottsdale.

To date, 14 of the top-30 and 85 of the top-125 money leaders from the 2010 season have committed.  A field of 132 players will vie for the $6.1 million purse, the $1,098,000 first-place check and FedEx Cup points.

Phil Mickelson (No. 4), Johnson (No. 14), Hunter Mahan (No. 20), Robert Allenby (No. 21) and Rickie Fowler (No. 28) are the highest ranked players on the Official World Golf Ranking currently in the field.  Other top-ranked players who have committed include Bubba Watson (No. 33), Nick Watney (No. 37), Ben Crane (No. 39), O’Hair (No. 42), Bo Van Pelt (No. 44), Ryan Moore (No. 46) and Martin Laird (No. 49).

PGA TOUR members have until 5 p.m. on Friday, January 28, to commit to play in the Waste Management Phoenix Open.  Eligible players are assigned one of 34 PGA TOUR priority ranking categories based on their past performance on TOUR. The field will continue to change as players with higher priority rankings commit to play in the Open.

Other notables to recently commit include 2011 Hyundai Tournament of Champions winner Jonathan Byrd, Scott Verplank and Stephen Ames. 

Chris DiMarco (2002), Jesper Parnevik (1998) and Rocco Mediate (1999) join Calcavecchia, Mickelson, Perry and Mahan as the other former FBR/Phoenix Open champions in the field thus far.

A number of local golfers also have committed including Ricky Barnes, Robert Garrigus, Martin Laird, Billy Mayfair, Pat Perez, Chez Reavie and Kevin Streelman.

TOM LEHMAN RECEIVES SPONSOR EXEMPTION FOR PHOENIX OPEN

PHOENIX, Ariz. – 2011 Waste Management Phoenix Open Tournament Chairman Mike McQuaid announced today that Scottsdale resident Tom Lehman will receive the first of five sponsor exemptions for the 2011 Waste Management Phoenix Open, scheduled to be played January 31 – February 6 at the TPC Scottsdale.  “We’re excited to have Tom return for his 12th consecutive Phoenix Open,” McQuaid said.  “He’s had great success at TPC Scottsdale and has been a terrific former champion ever since winning here in 2000. He and his family are very civic minded and do a lot for the Phoenix community.”

  Lehman, a former U.S. Ryder Cup Captain, has five PGA TOUR career victories and two Champions TOUR victories, including the 1996 British Open, TOUR Championship and the 2010 Senior PGA Championship. In 2010, he made 6 of 9 cuts on the PGA TOUR and had four top-25 finishes, including a T-14 at the Waste Management Phoenix Open. On the Champions TOUR in 2010, Lehman played in 14 events, making the cut in all 14, had one victory at the Senior PGA Championship and 12 top-25 finishes.  He finished 12th on the 2010 Champions TOUR Money List.  

The Thunderbirds have a total of five exemptions to give out to the 2011 Waste Management Phoenix Open. Waste Management Phoenix Open Recognized

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, FL — The Waste Management Phoenix Open Golf Tournament (

Scottsdale, AZ) was honored by the PGA TOUR at the TOUR’s Tournament Advisory Council (TAC) Meetings this week.

 An event that annually produces among the biggest daily crowds on TOUR, the Waste Management Phoenix Open earned “Most Engaged Community” honors in 2010. 

“On behalf of the PGA TOUR, I am pleased to acknowledge and congratulate the outstanding job and special recognition the Waste Management Phoenix Open has received for its efforts,” said PGA TOUR EVP and Chief of Operations Andy Pazder. “The tournament committee should be extremely proud for being acknowledged as the best among its peers on TOUR.” 

One hole at TPC Scottsdale serves as the perfect example of the community’s involvement and participation. With 4,260 bleacher seats and more than 100 venues, the par-3 16th hole sees an average of 10,000 spectators each day. In addition to the bleacher seats and other venues, more than 130 skyboxes surround the inimitable, crowd-gathering hole. In its 75th anniversary in 2010, the Waste Management Phoenix Open crossed the $65 million mark in charitable donations thanks to the overwhelming community support of the event.     

“Over the last 75 years, the Waste Management Phoenix Open has taken great pride in exposing the

Phoenix area to the outside world,” said Pat McGinley, past tournament chairman. “Our community embraces this undertaking, with 5,000 volunteers each year, a tremendous amount of corporate support and of course, our amazing fan base that helps create one of the most unique stops on the PGA TOUR. $75 Weeklong Grounds Badge:

A $75 weeklong Grounds badge (a $175 value or $100 savings) is available only at the Main Tournament Entrance Ticket Booth. $75 will buy you one General Admission Grounds Badge valid for each day of the 2010 tournament (Monday – Sunday).
 
$5 Tickets:

$5 tickets will be sold at the Main Tournament Entrance Ticket Booth (only) on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of tournament week.  Tickets will only be valid for the day on which they are purchased. $5 tickets will be limited to two per person. $5 tickets are not available through Ticketmaster and offer fans a $20 savings off the typical $25 general admission.

Commemorative 75th Anniversary Poster:

Commemorative 75th Anniversary posters featuring Phoenix Open greats Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer, Johnny Miller and Phil Mickelson will be available throughout the tournament and will sell for just $7.50. Sunday $7.50 Meal Deal:

On Sunday, February 28, during the final round of the 2010 Waste Management Phoenix Open, fans can purchase a hot dog, chips and a non-alcoholic beverage for just $7.50 (a $3 savings) at all Prom-Catering concession stands.

21-Gun Shot At Glory Salute:

There will be a 21-gun salute by the Marine Corp prior to the start of Wednesday afternoon’s Shot At Glory closest-to-the-pin contest on the 16th hole. The Waste Management Phoenix Open’s Shot At Glory is a unique closest-to-the-pin contest for charity on the famed 16th hole on Wednesday, February 24th. The contest begins at 3:30 pm and will feature approximately 30 participants from all walks of life, including celebrities, war heroes, tournament sponsors and regular, every-day golf fans. In fact, two lucky fans will be chosen randomly from the 16th hole crowd and asked to participate in the contest.

Sam Saunders, Grandson of Arnold Palmer, Playing in 2010 Waste Management Phoenix Open

PHOENIX, Ariz. – 2010 Waste Management Phoenix Open Tournament Chairman David Rauch announced today that Sam Saunders, grandson of legendary golfer Arnold Palmer, has received the eighth and final sponsor exemption for the 2010 Waste Management Phoenix Open.  Billy Mayfair, Rickie Fowler, Jonathan Kaye, Rocco Mediate, Alvaro Quiros, Joe Ogilvie and Chris DiMarco received the other sponsor exemptions.   

“Sam was a great amateur golfer who is now looking to get his professional career going and we are excited to give him an opportunity,” Rauch said.  “And adding Arnold Palmer’s grandson to the field of our 75th anniversary tournament is terrific. Arnie is one of this tournament’s greatest ambassadors and an Honorary Thunderbird.”

The 22-year-old Saunders turned pro last spring after his junior year at Clemson University, and has played in two PGA TOUR events in 2010 on sponsor exemptions, the Bob Hope Classic and the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am , where he finished T-70.

Saunders was a medalist at the 2005 U.S. Junior Amateur, and he won the Florida State High School Golf Championship as a junior at Trinity Prep High School in Winter Park, Fla., where he was a four-time, first-team all-state player.

Stricker & Johnson Committ to 2010 Waste Management Phoenix Open

PHOENIX, Ariz. – Steve Stricker, a seven-time winner on the PGA TOUR and the world’s 3rd-ranked golfer; and Zach Johnson, the 2007 Masters champ and the 23rd-ranked golfer in the world, are among the latest to commit to the 2010 Waste Management Phoenix Open, which will be played Feb. 22-28 at the TPC Scottsdale.

Other commitments received include four-time PGA TOUR winner Chad Campbell and two-time winner Paul Goydos.
